I was only seventeen years old and pretty dumb about such things, although of course I’d heard older guys using words like “cocksucker.” I had never really thought much about them. If anyone had tried to tell me there were such guys I’d have said they were nuts—because guys just didn’t do things like that. It wasn’t until a kid I knew stayed overnight with me that I discovered there were such things, actually, as queers. My grandma had gone to visit her sister for the weekend which meant I was left alone in the house (my parents were killed in a car accident when I was seven, so I lived with just Grandma in her big white house on Main Street). This kid I was telling you about—his name was Merv— came over to the house just before dark and we fooled around a lot, watching television, raiding the refrigerator, playing catch in the front room, which, if she had found out about it, would have given Grandma a heart attack. She had a lot of delicate stuff lying around on little dinky shelves. I don’t know what the stuff was good for. I thought it was pretty dumb, but she liked it and was always warning me not to break any of the junk or she’d rap me over the head. She would have, too.
Well, anyway… Merv and I fooled around all evening and, finally, he said he was tired and wanted to go to bed. I told him to go upstairs and crawl in, said I’d be along after I watched the Johnny Pierson Show. Merv, a tall, brown-eyed, brown-haired kid, didn’t seem to like this idea very much and said he didn’t want to go to bed all by himself. I said I guess I could go to bed and skip seeing the show, but I grumbled about it all the way up the stairs. Well, we went to my bedroom and stripped. I started to put on my pajamas, but Merv said he didn’t have no pajamas and it wasn’t very polite for me to go showing him up by wearing mine.
