FOREWORD

THE GAY BOY’S BIBLE is a documentation for devious dealings within the same sex… is the definitive, if slightly tongue-i n-cheek, how-to book for the confirmed practitioners as well as the thoroughly repressed…and none will remain unhelped by Jeri’s advice…TO OUR READERS

For too many years the actual human body has taken second place to sculpture and paintings. Some of these paintings, in the showing of the female form, undraped, adorn the walls of the world’s finest museums. The major portion of these were done during the Renaissance period of history. It is time the archaic thinking in our society is brought out of the Renaissance and into its proper context in the year 1968. This progression in thinking is narrowly beginning to happen. The “New Morality” of the sixties is making inroads. Many nudist camps, whether mixed or not, are helping pave the way to a newer and freer way of thinking. The male physique, too long hidden by comparison is now coming out from its overlong hibernation. Therefore, we insert this section of pictures in order for our readers to gain insight as to the male anatomy.

  1. Beat

Gay Boys Bible is a rare 1968 advice book written in a very campy style by Jeri (a guy), one of Manifest Publications main authors. There is no copyright page which was not unusual for some of the smallest gay pulp publishers. The back cover informs us that Jeri wrote it, as he did for four other Manifest books. All the rest were by “Anonymous” with one of those anonymous guys being none other than Carl Corley.

Manifest only ever published 8 books, 5 by Jeri (a guy) and 3 by anonymous—all in 1968.

The book’s pagination starts on the very first page, which was/is unique for publishers, and is indicative of their inexperience.

Tom Norman’s excellent reference book, American Gay Erotic Paperbacks: A Bibliography, is where the information about the publication date is obtained. It’s also the source of the fact that Los Alamitos, California is where Manifest was located. Tom lists all eight of the Manifest books, this being the second one they published. He also lists the four LB books which were also from Manifest.

The cover of this book is a perfect example of their weirdness. There was never any other cover that came close to it for flat-out strangeness. Two guys are picking up a metal keg that a third guy is sitting on. Nobody has clothes on, and they each have quite different bodies. The guy on the right is the oldest and he’s well tanned. The guy on the left is slightly chunkier and has no tan except on his face and arms. The guy in the middle, who’s sitting on the keg, is practically scrawny and that’s probably why he was selected to be the one who got lifted. He has a tanned face and neck and is wearing a metal chain with a small object hanging on it. His lower legs are quite hairy and his gaze is downward. The other two guys are looking at the camera and they look a bit strained. There are balloons with lettering obscuring their more interesting parts. Eventually Manifest stopped putting “balloons” over guys’ private parts on their covers, and eventually they used copyright pages. This happen by their 7th book, also by Jeri.

I feel sure the cover photo was taken by Bob Mizer (of Athletic Model Guild fame) based on the metal keg. He used it repeatedly as a prop in his photos. That exact same metal keg is in AMG Studs Number 1 on pages 21 and 30. It’s also on page 39 of AMG Desperados. (And this great Hommi website has those mags!) The cover is similar to all the Manifest covers—a nude male photo having nothing to do with the text, and because it’s one of their early covers, there’s a color “balloon” covering his privates with some cautionary words.

The very posed photos inside the book have nothing to do with the text. They were simply added as an extra enticement to buy the book. Manifest always used that enticement. Note the 14th photo—it shows two guys with their arms up, leaping in midair. Because of their leap their members are totally upright, though soft—quite a unique photo! Most photographers didn’t (and still don’t) photograph guys in mid-leap (Bob Mizer definitely did.).
