“Hello, Mr. Stokes,” Beau said. “I came to hire a hand like I said on the telephone.”
The frown disappeared from Mr. Stokes’ brow. “Likely one of the boys will suit you. There’re only two left at home now. Kirk and Corky. All my other boys are either married or are in the service. Both are as strong as young bulls. Kirk’s seventeen and Corky’s a year younger.”
“Your boys in school?”
“No, they do their book learning by mail mostly. They’re both smart boys. Reckon you’ll find them down at the sheep bam. They’re putting up a new run for the sheep dip. A neighbor boy is down there with them helping out.”
“Thanks,” Beau said. He circled the house with Blaze at his heels. A small herd of sheep bleated from the opposite hill. Beau spied a sawhorse on the ground and next to it a pile of lumber and a couple of rolls of tar paper. There was no sign of the boys.
Beau poked his head inside the barn. No one seemed about. As he started to call out, he heard strange sounds in one of the feed rooms. The door was closed but a patch of light shown through a knothole. Laying his hands on Blaze’s shoulders, he gently pushed him to the straw-covered floor and knelt and peered through the hole.
Between stacked burlap bags of feed he saw the three boys sitting on the floor. Two were raven-haired, and looked like the brothers he had remembered from last year’s fair. The other boy was a redhead. All were clad in jeans and sat with legs widely spread looking at a couple of illustrated booklets which they passed back and forth between themselves, grinning.
