FOREWORD
What really happens in the minds and hearts of the people concerned when scandal strikes in high places? This is the theme of Martyn Goff’s new novel.
David, who tells the story, is the art student son of the Minister of Communications. He knows that his father has a chance of becoming Prime Minister. He also knows that his father’s brother, a homosexual living with a flamboyant young actor, could be a threat to his chances. Where the odds are long, even a touch of scandal might upset the race. So it strikes David as odd when his struggle to live away from home is successful on condition that he becomes Uncle Julian’s lodger.
Deeply involved in his own love affair with Karen, a clever, wilful girl, David is only gradually drawn into Julian’s menage. Martyn Goff brilliantly captures the way in which this boy, sympathetic and affectionate towards his uncle, is brought face to face with the reality of their very different sexual outlooks. But it is not until what the family has always vaguely dreaded does in fact happen that he realises how complex is the situation in which he is enmeshed.
He then discovers not only his father’s dubious motives and the profound effect of the debacle on public affairs, but also the way in which it violently upsets private relationships—and his own personality.
