“The family recently leased this island, Mike,” Thad said quickly, his manner composed. “We believe a rich deposit of oil is buried here. Our geology reports confirm the existance of a large bed of low grade oil lying under the island and the sea. We believe we can tap the bed of oil by drilling through the island. We intend to send a drilling crew there next year.” Thad paused dramatically to wet his lips. “We want to establish and maintain an office on the island staffed by a member of the family.” Thad grinned broadly. “Certain times during the year the lagoon in the middle of the island spouts a substance that could be oil. You’re going to be there when it happens. You will measure the substance and send reports back along with samples for our lab to analyze.”
Mike blinked his eyes. A chill shot up and down his backbone. His skin felt clammy. “I won’t go,” he said, his voice strained. “You can’t force me to go there!”
Thad shrugged beefy shoulders. “No, we can’t force you, Mike.” He fixed him with a stern look. “We can disinherit you. The family is in complete agreement that it’s either the island or complete castration from the family.”
He stared at his uncle, a nerve in his forehead jumping wildly. “I’ll take you to court! I’ll sue you!”
Thad laughed softly. “You’ll need money to pay for legal services. You’re broke. Even if you find an attorney willing to take your case without funds, you know we’ll appeal any decision favorable to you through every court in the land. It will take years to gain a settlement. In the meantime we’ll brand you as queer, smear you in the press, play up all your little homosexual episodes, give you the kind of notoriety and popularity that will brand you for life!”
Mike doubled his fists. He stared at Thad, wanting to smash him, hurt him, erase the smug smile from his fat face.
Thad moved around the desk. “We’ll pay you a grand a month, supply you with food, shelter and clothing. You’ll have nothing to do except live on the island for one year. After that, if you’ve behave yourself, we’ll reconsider your future in the family business empire.”
“And if I refuse?”
Thad shrugged beefy shoulders. “You do have a third alternative.” He paused dramatically for effect. “You can walk out of here and forget you re an Avalon. In that case, you’ll be on your own for the rest of your life!”
