In the third volume of his journal, Orion tells us of his return to St. Louis, his negotiations on the part of the Sioux, his attempts to ensure the survival of his Indian friends as their hereditary enemies, the Pawnee are armed as allies of the Government. He meets again, the tormented Baptist preacher, Jedediah Fuller, who has forsaken his missionary work among the Indians and has been given the job of negotiating treaties with the tribes. In his battle with the Indian Agent to save the Sioux from decimation by the Pawnee, he is captured by the Pawnee warrior who is Fuller’s lover.

After a week of severe torture, he frees himself through a challenge that Fuller cannot refuse and still keep his favored position among the Pawnee. Orion defeats Fuller and the Proud Eagle in open combat and rides out of the Pawnee camp a free man once more.

The next spring Orion and Jean-Paul return to the Jamboree at Bear Lake. The mature Orion finds he no longer has the attraction for the other trapper he once held. That realization, combined with the news that his father has died, ends their relationship. With the help of a young Quaker, Orion manages to put the pieces of his life together again.

He begins the long journey back to Boston. On the way he meets a young farmer with whom he intends to set up a farm outside of Boston, Unsure as to how well he will be able to adjust to “civilized life” again, he is struggling to establish some order that will allow him to satisfy his physical and emotional needs and at the same time not get him ostracized from the society in which he must now live.

A visit to the family of his Quaker friend changes all of Orion’s plans. His farmer friend, Matthew Forsythe is smitten with Gregory’s younger brother, David. In watching the two young men together, Orion realizes the depth of his commitment to Gregory. He is determined to set up a large farm in the Ohio valley which David and Matthew will work for him while he sets out in the spring to find Gregory.
