FOREWORD

In all those Hollywood films dealing with the early days of exploration of the Western Hemisphere, the Producers always managed to have sex-romance plots injected by introducing some female character in the guise of an Indian princess, usually Donna Reed. Not only did they avoid the issue of what really went on among these explorer-adventurers sexually, they didn’t even cast an actress who vaguely looked like a native.

We now know that when Columbus sailed he had written instructions concerning homosexual conduct aboard his ship. Indeed, homosexual attractions on voyages expecting to take three and more years was expected. Wise rulers and ship captains had definate guidelines to settle jealousies and sexual battles. In the European navies, prohibitions against homosexual conduct did not begin until the late 1700’s or early 1800’s when England faced the Malmukes of Egypt, an all-male “slave” warrior class created centuries before by the Ottoman Caliphs who decreed that these men be raised as homosexuals. When you are facing an enemy in battle the natural propaganda is to make the enemy’s customs evil.

The early travelers into America’s west, the trappers and mountain men, were hearty men and sexually active, to be sure. To believe that every one of them was a squawman is to stretch belief too far. The tales of the west are rife with stories of buddies, pal, and partners who needed little but the company of the other. Before the great gold rush of 1849 there were actually very few women in the west. Our ancestors, we must remember, were racial bigots on the whole. To believe, as Hollywood would have us, that every mountain man, every lone cowboy, had himself a comely Indian maiden (Elsa Martinelli or Barbara Carrera! is to believe in the tooth fairy.

The admired qualities of bravery, steadfastness, strength, and loyalty were natural qualities drawing men of likeness together. Hollywood told us more about it than they knew. All those cowboy heroes with the faithful sidekick who never kissed the heroine of those films, but rode off to new adventures with their buddy were closer to the truth than the general public knew.
