FOREWORD

Perhaps the most startling paradox of the “sexual revolution” of the seventies is that while we are reminded constantly that this is the age of totally open, free sexual identity, in reality many gay men are still struggling to define exactly who they are and what sort of personal code to live by. The growing acceptance of the gay lifestyle by straight America is causing as many problems as it is solving.

We are out of the closets, many gay men seem to be saying. The question now is: Where do we go from here?

Mick Stephens’ new novel is a hard-hitting look at this question and in Jerry Scott, detective extraordinary, author Stephens has drawn a portrait of a gay man dealing with the complex problems facing every homosexual everywhere.

The gay male in America in 1978 is continuing the struggle for equal rights which have already been won by so many others. Depending on where you live, equality has already been won, is just around the corner, or is still a long way off. But the burning philosophical, moral and sociological questions are always there demanding answers.

Whether or not Sado Murder holds any of these answers is up to the reader to decide upon completion of the book. Author Stephens is first of all an entertainer, and his latest Jerry Scott adventure is primarily a fast-paced detective thriller in the Raymond Chandler tradition. But like Chandler, Stephens has a deeper purpose. He observes the world about him and, in the guise of entertainment, he asks questions. Questions about the world we live in as well as about ourselves. Hopefully the reader will find himself asking these same questions if he hasn’t already.

Above all else, Stephens seems to be saying, the gay male needs a personal moral code, as all people do, to see him safely down the road of life he has chosen to walk. More so than ever now that the “sexual revolution” is upon us. The true theme is the importance of such a code to every gay man in America today. It raises questions every aware adult must answer before he can truly call himself “free”.
