FOREWORD
How far do the Mob’s corrupting fingers reach into our labor unions, into our politics, our police departments? What can one honest cop do about it? How long do the memories of a teen-aged love affair lasts in the hearts of the lovers?
Recent news stories have shown that labor racketeering is still a problem which plagues America, and TIME magazine has published a story saying that Richard Nixon may have been planning on using illegal contributions from corrupt labor leaders to buy the silence of the men involved in the Watergate break-in. And we are all the victims of their corrupt practices—all of us, consumers, union members, honest labor leaders. It was more dumb luck than anything else which prevented the crime bosses from buying a President of the United States!
But the actions of one man, one man who has been pushed too far, who had paid more than honor can stand—one man can threaten the whole corrupt structure. One of the favorite tools of corrupt men is blackmail, and one of the most frequently blackmailed groups in our society are gay people, including bisexuals. But what if we refused to be blackmailed? What if our society stopped denying the rights of sexual minorities? What secrets might then be revealed to the glaring light of day?
This is the story of a dead man’s secrets, both of which tortured him until he decided that he must live honestly or die. One secret was his bisexuality, his love for boys which he hid so carefully from his wife and children. The other secret was his participation in a scheme of payoffs to corrupt public officials from funds stolen from honest union members. He decided to strike back against his tormentors and the society which made their blackmailing possible. He was shot down and killed, but his secrets did not die with him! The memory of a love affair that he had had with John Citrone when they were school boys lived on in John’s heart, and the clue to the criminal secrets which Jonathan Madden had hidden before his death lay in those memories.
It turns into a hot and murderous race between the mob and John Citrone and Gary Brannon. BRANNON’S CASE is a classical teaser in the tradition of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. The clues are all there in plain view, if you know how to look! The cruel and homophobic gangsters kill and blunder blindly in their attempt to recover the—papers which will destroy them and their political allies, but the eys of love follow a trail that they can never see.
