Introduction

Beau Crandall is a blond twenty-two year old, fresh out of the Navy who decides to come to New York City to seek a new life. In the Navy he has had numerous sex experiences with other males, but also, along the way, there have been girls, but Beau feels his true urge is for the male image. He checks into the Andrews House, and finds several interesting diversions. He gets a job with a theatrical agency and this serves as a springboard for a number of episodes, including being seduced by a stage actor of some renown. Also he meets a photographer who provides some interesting pastimes for him.

A former ship mate, David St. Clair turns out to be directing an off-Broadway play and after a rehearsal one evening they renew their friendship which leads Beau to discover that David has developed some strange sexual desires.

After Beau moves to Greenwich Village he had a number of interesting adventures, including a pick-up from “Queer Alley”, a favorite haunt of many lonely searching gay boys.

Beau gets involved with the making of an “underground” movie, which introduces him to a whole set of interesting adventures.

He also attends a wild sex party on Long Island as the guest of Milford Evans, the actor, and finds the entertainment of the evening consists of “living pictures”, all of them undraped males!

At a Village costume party, Beau meets Colin Flaubert, a young sensitive pianist who affects him very much. They continue to see one another and Beau realizes he wants to protect this shy, fragile boy whose talent for the piano borders on genius.

Cohn tells Beau of his early life, and we see a sensitive boy’s awakening and awareness that he is attracted to men, and some of the experiences that becomes a part of this awakening are revealed to us.

A crucial moment arrives when the famous movie star, Rance Cunard returns to New York, and Beau remembers that once he had been picked up by Rance and they had had an affair. Now, they re-new their acquaintance, but it precipitates a crisis for Beau that nearly borders on tragedy. Colin and he are caught up in a real drama in which he must make a decision.

However, all ends happily, and we find that Beau and Colin face an uncertain future together with love for one another.
