AUTHOR’S FOREWORD:
The following script is one of the most difficult undertakings of a long career as a writer. Inspiration for TOPS, BOTTOMS AND SIDEPOCKETS came as an instantaneous flash, a once in a lifetime chance.
I met Robin Versage and Sandy at a cocktail party given by a mutual friend. He, like Robin, was in the decorating business and had done some excellent work for me. There were perhaps twenty people present and in the manner of social affairs, little groups formed spontaneously. I wound up with Robin, who was a most personable young man of barely half my age. Through our host, Robin had already been apprized of my professional status and he was interested in the fact that my writing was largely in the field of sexual psychology.
He was curious about my ability to write with some success about homosexuals, their habits, their personalities and their origins. I frankly admitted, noting he was obviously homosexual, that there had never been a good and logical treatise on male homosexuality because most of the published work was written by non-homosexuals on a clinical basis. Even the literate homosexuals who had tried, had failed because of some feelings, plus the difficulty of analyzing themselves.
Robin asked me point blank if I had ever tried to work in collaboration with a true homosexual and I had to admit that my efforts had been sporadic, unsatisfactory and expensive. He then asked me how it would be possible to accomplish a collaboration without secondary influences inhibiting the deviate.
On the spot, I offered to buy a good tape recorder and all the tape there was in the world. I explained that the first tape or two would be useless and meandering, but once he became used to talking into an impersonal microphone, he would find himself. I made light of continuity, retorical excellence, impact and all the other mechanical things a writer is constantly afraid of.
I was charmed with Robin, and I believed he was charmed with me. He agreed to take my tape recorder and play…
