INTRODUCTION
How did you handle the transition from heterosexuality or bisexuality to that of homosexuality?
This is what I ask my patients when they come to me with their individual cases. Their responses vary broadly, of course. As unique as the personalities themselves. I think in the six cases I have related here, I’ve covered the gamut of responses.
First, we’ll deal with a successful designer who made a casual transition from a married, heterosexual life to a homosexual one, starting with his lifelong friend, Michael.
The second case is of a young Mexican-American who was “brought out” at a tender age by a foster brother. He was virtually gay from his very early formative years.
Then we meet Gregory, raised in the street gangs of Brooklyn, who eventually became a hustler and eventually worked out his own homosexual lifestyle.
Nicholas propensity for homosexual, arose, for the most part, from his rape by soldiers in his homeland. He discovered his true nature at an early age and has coped with it rather well.
The fifth study is Beau. Essentially asexual, he found orgasm with a much older man, and out of this relationship with Adolfo emerged a satisfying gay lifestyle.
The case of Gregory is the least happy one. He is floundering, sexually speaking and cannot accept—or is yet unable to cope—with his sexual nature. As a result, he leads a double existence with heterosexual friends and homosexual one-night stands which do not truly bring him satisfaction. His ineptness in handling his problem is typical of the many patients who come to me, incapable of coming to grips with their problems.
So whatever your sexual preference, you’ll probably be enlightened by these cases of men who were confronted with a choice of sexualities, and the ways they coped with their lifestyle.
