Murder mysteries concerning homosexuals have traditionally been crimes of passion, the murder evolving from the homosexual situation. That a homosexual would traditionally be the victim is, as passe an idea now as the classic denouement, “the butler did it.”

“Mystery of Toomey’s Island” has broken from this tradition on purpose. With Gay Liberation fighting to prove that the homosexual society of the United States is as responsible, honest and self-sufficient as its surrounding heterosexual camp, it is absurd to continue to afflict gay fiction with the old laws.

It is said, that if one looks hard enough one can find a mystery anywhere they look. Webster’s dictionary defines mystery as: something which baffles or perplexes. In this mystery, homosexuality per se has little to do with the murders, although the victims happen to be homosexual men.

On an island like Toomey’s, which has been shrouded in mystery since the settling of the first inhabitants, a curious person could spend a lifetime unraveling them all. Smugglers, pirates, criminals, all sorts of unsavory characters had lived there at one time or another.

It is not the mysteries of the past nor the color of the island, however, which brought Nate Drew and Ross Hancock to Toomey’s Island. There was a more recent and perplexing mystery for Nate, the ever willing sleuth, to look into.

The death of a well known writer had stirred interest from all directions, especially when the closest person to him was arrested for the crime. The collecting of insurance money is not an uncommon motive for murder. What is rare is when no one, including the Chief of Police, believes that he is guilty. But if so, then there has to be a killer loose on the island somewhere.

The clues are few, the questions many. An amateur sleuth on the trail of a killer, but the trails are as many as the questions. Everyone is suspect, yet the only one with a strong enough motive for murder, it seems, is the roommate. There is a librarian who seemed to be closer to the victim, than was the victim’s roommate—there is a young man who seemed to be closer to the roommate, than the victim was—and a island full of people who were considerably interested in a manuscript the victim had just completed the night of his murder.

Nate and Ross sift through all the clues of the cases, each with his own ideas about the case. Then there is the Police Chief who is interested in everyone who might be involved in the murder. Maybe it was just a maniac killer who didn’t like writers.

The possibilities are innumerable, as are the suspects. Maybe you can figure out the Mystery of Toomey’s Island…
