FOREWORD
Although statistics are regrettably lacking, it has been often suggested by sociologists that it is among homosexuals that we find the greatest number of casualties in the modern sexual revolution. They become casualties, obviously, because of the lag between our laws and our mores.
While it is easy and convenient to generalize the problems resulting from the conflict between what our customs and laws dictate and the reality of human sexual behavior, on the personal, individual level these conflicts can often be intricate and even traumatic.
This novel, a murder mystery with explicit homosexual behavior, provides a glimpse of the conflicts that arise when an officer of the law discovers that he is homosexual. The fact that the author seems to take a sympathetic view of homosexuality in that he does not condemn the behavior he illustrates should not detour the reader from the fact that the situations present here are very real indeed in our contemporary society.
It is interesting to note that the central character. Detective Larry Baldwin, decides his own fate without regard to external influence. The author clearly illustrates that the officer can and does function perfectly in his job, even after his own personal discovery.
In itself, this might well be viewed as an argument for an end to discrimination in public employment from the standpoint of individual sexual preference.
Whether it is viewed from the sociological standpoint or as a well-plotted, fast-reading, entertaining mystery with explicit homosexual scenes, this novel will provide some enjoyable and perhaps challenging reading hours.
