Had he had a slightly better insight into the way the world turns, he might not have found himself in prison—and the wildest time of his life. For, as Mr. Goodman states: “A boy of ten or eleven has a few great sexual adventures—he thinks they’re great—but then he has the bad luck to get caught and in trouble. They try to persuade him by punishment and other explanations that some different behavior is much better, but he knows by the evidence of his senses that nothing could be better. If he gives in, he lives on in a profound disbelief, a disbelief in their candor and a disbelief even of his own body feelings. But if he persists and proves incorrigible, then the evidence of his senses is attached to what is socially punished, explained away; he may even be put away.”
Prologue
It all happened so quickly. That was the thing that astonished Tommy Brennan the most. Even the wait in the booking room at the jail, the wait in his cell, and the wait to be tried, seemed to fly by so quickly.
And then, at last, he was led to his new home, a cell in the largest prison in California, to serve a two-year sentence for attempted robbery…
