“One of my companions. Professor Kelley, saw you yesterday morning,” Dan said slowly.
Billy flushed. “You—mean—“
“There’s nothing to be ashamed about.” Dan gave Billy’s hand a squeeze. “I understand perfectly. But a substitute is only a substitute. I’m just a year older than you, Billy, but many years wiser.”
“Then you don’t think there was anything wrong in what I did?” Billy asked anxiously.
“Of course not.”
Billy looked relieved.
“It’s too bad you and the other shepherd boys don’t get together,” Dan intoned.
Billy caught his breath. “What do you mean?”
“You can… help each other.”
Billy flushed again. “I know that some of the boys…” His voice trailed off.
“Yes?” Dan said eagerly.
“Well… I don’t know how to say it.”
“You’ve seen them?”
Billy nodded his head, yes. He seemed reluctant to talk about it but Dan kept after him. Dan kept prodding him. Billy bit his lower lip.
“I never joined them. Honest.” He seemed anxious for Dan to believe him. “But I’ve watched them. Sometimes I felt like joining in, I admit. But I never did. Honest. You must believe me.”
“I believe you.” Dan squeezed Billy’s hand extra hard. “But if you felt like joining in you should have. It would have been all right. You would have enjoyed it.”
Billy stared at Dan as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. His new friend, Dan, was telling him it would have been okay for him to fool around with the other shepherd boys. He just couldn’t believe it. Was Dan kidding him? No, he couldn’t believe that.
