One of the earliest releases from Jaguar Productions, “A Deep Compassion” clearly demonstrates the direction the studio was heading. Filled with rich storylines, deep pathos that both stimulate and disturb, serious attempts at acting, and raw, natural sex, this video represents one of the best the era had to offer.
The story centered on Rocky (Duane Ferguson), an escaped convict, who is helped by his friends, Johnny (Robert Weaver) and Phil (Tom Ringo, unfortunately in a non-sexual role). Johnny feels the best hiding place for Rocky is a remote cabin up in the mountain where his blind brother Karl (David Arlen) lives. Living with a blind recluse in the woods is not Rocky’s idea of fun, so he borrows Johnny’s ass one last time for some serious fucking.

Karl’s life is simple. He has his music, his braille books and his fantasies. Once each day, he wanders along the trail through the wood until his finds the spot where he is visited by handsome hunk, Jim Cassidy in a surrealistic sequence that drips with romance and passion. Karl is happy with his life and his dreams.
Unfortunately, living like a hermit is too much for the ex-convict, and in a fit of passion, he forcefully has his way with poor, defenseless Karl.
The final scene of the movie is a bit disturbing, and clearly demonstrates Jaguar’s tendency to wrench with one’s emotions, either with romance of with violence. In ye another twist, the video does have a happy ending after all.
The sex is filmed in a very natural manner, allowing the guys to do their thing while the camera is rolling. Although this sometimes leads to problems when the camera can’t follow the action, it is a style very reminiscent of the 70s. The sex in “A Deep Compassion” is not the best we’ve seen, but what amazed us was how seamlessly it fit in with an otherwise already full movie.
“A Deep Compassion” is a strange, almost cerebral piece, with a full range of feelings drawn out of the viewer, coupled with enjoyable sex scenes, and a solid plot. Certainly not an epic by any means, it nonetheless is an excellent example of the style that was to become Jaguar’s trademark.
