“Frankie’s a swell guy,” Lee said gaily. “He’s a doll.”

“He?” Russell’s eyes opened to circles of incredulity. “You mean, she’s a he?”

“Well, not really, baby. You know—a dyke.”

“A lesbian?” Russell suddenly wanted to vomit.

“Sure, sweetie,” Lee said. “But let’s not talk about him, doll. Let’s talk about us.” He sat on the bed and ran his eyes over Russell. He patted the bed—an invitation for Russell to join him at his side.

Russell felt ill. But he realized he couldn’t antagonize Lee, for the man was a stepping stone on the road to the top. He sat down on the bed. Lee’s hand reached out and Russell cringed beneath the touch.

“Ah, come off it, baby,” Lee said angrily. “You don’t have to pretend with me. I know you’re one—like me. Frankie told me. Besides, I know you dig my kind. I can see it in your eyes. You have darling eyes, baby. You and I are going to get along just fine.”

Russell felt his stomach churn in nausea. How far, he wondered, would he have to go to appease this overt fairy?
