INTRODUCTION

There has long been a preponderance of psychological literature that would seem to make its readers believe that there is no such thing as a lasting love relationship between one homosexual and another.

For example, take the following statement made by George F. Gilder in his book SEXUAL SUICIDE: “… the life of tricks and trades is in fact agonizing for most of its practitioners. Lasting relationships are few and sour. The usual circuit of gay bars, returning servicemen, forlorn personal advertisements, and street cruises affords gratifications… brief and squalid…”

“A newer approach to homosexuality,” says a more enlightened Dea J. LeShan in her SEX AND YOUR TEENAGER, “would interest itself not in the fact of homosexuality alone, but in its place in the life of a particular human being—and the range is just as wide as it would be with heterosexuals—from frightened, destructive, miserable people, who have never found themselves, to people who live creatively, constructively, and in mature and responsible love relationships.”

And, in fact LeShan’s viewpoint on the latter was never proved more valid than in the documentary by Donald Norsic “Celebrating Lovers” in the April 1978 Blueboy magazine, which outlined three gay marriages that have survived—one for as long as ten years.

The following, then, is the story of men trying simply to cope as best they can with a variety of male-male relationships. It is the story of one specific gay marriage and the effect it had not only on the people immediately involved but on those around them—

On Gerald Miller, husband and father, who is forced into divorcing his wife and deserting his son because of his love for another man.

On Tag Jennings, Gerald’s lover.

On Montana Miller who, made bitter by the desertion of his father, decides to seek his own special kind of revenge.

On Cort Jasfner, whose failure in one love affair has almost spoiled him on love completely, until he meets his boss’ attractive son.

But, perhaps, most of all, it is the story of one young man’s confrontation with his possible gayness, of his difficult struggle to finally shed inbred heterosexual inhibitions in order to accept his own natural sexuality as well as to accept the love and friendship of the men he had originally considered his enemies.
