“There’s just one question I’d like to ask you, Fleep,” he murmured. “When I get older, and you get older too, will you still want me hanging around? I mean, after I’m twenty-one, and the adoption papers won’t mean much any more.” Philippe stirred, and grasped the boy’s hand more firmly in his own.

“Nobody can see into the future, mon cher,” he said finally. “But if I believe anything, I believe I’ll want you with me all the rest of my life. Does that answer you?”

“It does. And the same goes for me. I couldn’t imagine any kind of life without you.” Lifting the giant fist to his mouth, he inserted one, then two muscular fingers between his lips, and sucked mightily on them.
