FOREWORD

Junior Jocks is a novel about one man’s quest for self-acceptance delineating his passage from fear to freedom, from circumspection to affirmation in a time when homosexuals could opt for either notoriety or secret shame. It described in a sense, but the range of emotions and viewpoints are so varied that the state of coming out is more than what happened, “the first time.”

The story is also a modern-day odyssey of a young man’s desperate search for happiness. Terrified by his own sexual nature and trapped in—a vicious circle, he is drawn into vivid confrontations with a host of wonderfully etched characters who compound his confusion. The story is set in California, but it might as easily be set in any other large American city. Each has its comparable sexual underground and smaller cities have their own modifications.

Our author, Allen Todd, believes, and so do we, that sex is an indispensable aspect of human relationships, and when it is appropriate to the development of these relationships in a novel, or to its characters, it should be described with all the honesty and candor at the writer’s disposal. This is what separates a fine story such as, Junior Jocks from an ordinary sex book: Here the erotic scenes grow out of the deep feelings “Todd” and his boys have for one another and are not just used to arouse mechanically the lurid interest of the reader. This is a serious novel, and it is our expectation that you will be deeply moved by it.

The story thrusts Terry into the adult world of emotions that involve lust and shame, acceptance, compassion, and regret. Terry has a burning desire to learn all he can about his own hot body, and the mysterious new world of the gay community that he is falling into.

After his first blow-job, he knows for sure that this is the type of sexual union he was meant to experience. He goes on from one sexual scene to another, learning something about himself as well as about others with each new contact. There are those who treat him kindly, and those who don’t, but one thing is always for sure—the sex is plentiful, and demanding, and fulfilling.

The story is noted for its realism, its insights into the main character’s attitude toward life, people, and himself, and the human drama it captures so forcefully.

    Synopsis by Eric Boyd
Terry’s story is a universal one as we follow him from junior high to college graduation. He learns early that his desires are different—and all-consuming. From the young father next door who teaches him to lift weights, to drive, and way more than that; to the senior high jock who takes him under his wing; to the boy his own age he meets at his family’s summer cabin. But none are enough, and soon the teen is exploring the bathrooms, parks and theaters around L.A. The serviceman he meets at a movie is a lot of fun! And when he’s finally old enough for the bars, he becomes even more insatiable. But when he meets Mike in college, he wonders if he can finally settle down. He can’t. He even toys with the idea of marrying Lorelei, who knows his full story, but realizes how ridiculous that would be. Instead, he’s off to San Francisco. Maybe Marty’s the one! Probably not.
