They say that life begins at forty, and for Wade Anderson, trucker, it really did. After years of a mediocre-to-nothing marriage, a young hitchhiker showed Wade what a couple of buddies could do for each other. The way Wade tells it, that’s the day he started to live.

Wade fell for his young teacher right from the first, but Cory had too many plans to want to be anyone’s full-time lover. He was going to Hollywood to make it big in the movies, and by the time Wade got back to California, Cory was working everyone he could.

The big, quietly shy man who felt ill-at-ease in a crowd, was forced to find out about the gay world on his own, with no one to act as guide. For a time it was a confusing kind of a jungle with a liver-lipped transvestite queen and a married couple in which the wife was always cheating on her mate. When Wade found the husband more attractive, he got everyone confused. The temptation to settle down with Wade was too great a threat for the husband, who had to beg Wade to go.

There’s a poignancy about a man who must stumble alone through the gay jungle, trying to find himself. The writer, Bert Shrader, tells us a wildly sensual saga, but along with some powerful hots, he peoples his book with men we can care about, men who are very real. Perhaps this is because many of Bert’s characters have real-life counterparts.

Bert tells us about a hitchhiker, for instance, who rides with his pants off and returns home each afternoon as soon as school lets out. He swears he met such a boy in Louisiana a couple of years ago. He said he drove back and forth on that damned road for several weeks until he was a physical wreck.

“If ever there was a satyr, it was that boy!” Bert says. “I could write a book just on him!”
